Acholi Community elders seek support to finalise chiefdom constitution

By Ijoo Bosco

Acholi elders have appealed for financial and logistical support to complete the drafting of a constitution aimed at strengthening the traditional institution and addressing land-related concerns within the community.

The appeal was made by Elder Oloya Mika during an Acholi constitution validation and review meeting.

He said the drafting process had already undergone five rounds of consultations with Boma chiefs across the Acholi community, with support from youth leaders.

Elder Oloya urged Acholi members and well-wishers to contribute resources needed to finalise the document, describing the constitution as an important framework for strengthening the authority and coordination of the traditional institution.

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Acholi Community in South Sudan, Otim David, said the community plans to convene a strategic meeting within the next three weeks to discuss issues of common interest ahead of the forthcoming elections.

Otim encouraged community members to exercise their democratic rights by freely choosing leaders of their choice while safeguarding the interests and welfare of the Acholi community.

He also challenged candidates seeking re-election to account for their previous performance, urging voters to assess their achievements and records before deciding whether to support them for another term.

Otim called on the Acholi community to maintain unity, strengthen cooperation, and embrace collective action to advance peace, development, and shared interests.
