Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore has challenged mining companies operating in Ngauro to ensure their activities contribute to local development rather than creating hardship for surrounding communities.
Governor Lobong called on mining companies to work closely with local authorities and meet their corporate social responsibility obligations, including supporting road rehabilitation and expanding access to clean water.
He directed mining firms to construct their own boreholes, protect existing community water sources, and keep gold-processing activities away from rivers to prevent pollution.
The governor also urged companies to properly restore mining pits after excavation to reduce risks to residents and the environment.
Companies operating directly from Juba were further encouraged to coordinate with state authorities on registration and community sensitisation to improve cooperation with local communities.
The mining companies reportedly pledged to address concerns raised by the communities and fulfill their CSR commitments.
“Mining must bring development to the people, not hardship,” Governor Lobong said.
