By Lodu William Odiya

The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), under the chairmanship of President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has intensified preparations for the party’s 3rd National Convention and the general elections scheduled for December 2026.

According to a release from the Presidential Press Unit on Wednesday, Kiir, who is the chairman of the SPLM and the party’s presidential candidate, reviewed preparations for the party’s internal democratic processes, including congresses, primaries, and the selection of candidates for the upcoming elections.

“The meeting adopted guidelines to guide the conduct of internal party congresses and primaries and the selection of SPLM candidates at various levels,” the statement partly read.

“Under the guidelines, SPLM candidates will be selected through the party’s internal democratic structures before representing the SPLM in the general elections against candidates from other political parties,” the statement added.

The process will cover candidates for local councils, county commissioners, state legislative assemblies, state governors, and members of the national parliament.

SPLM Secretary-General Dr. Akol Paul Kordi said party leaders and cadres are expected to return to their respective constituencies and organisational areas to begin preparations for the internal processes in accordance with the newly adopted guidelines.

The meeting underscored the importance of strengthening internal democracy within the SPLM and ensuring that capable and committed cadres are selected to represent the Party and serve the people at all levels of government.

The leaders also commended the party’s chairman for his continued guidance, wisdom, and leadership in advancing the movement’s political and organisational agenda as the country moves towards the December 2026 elections.
