Vice President and Chairperson of the Economic Cluster, H.E. Prof. James Wani Igga, has directed the Ministry of Mining to ensure that all companies operating in South Sudan’s mining sector comply with the country’s laws and regulations.
Prof. Igga issued the directive on Monday during a briefing with the Minister of Mining, Hon. Losuba Ludoru Wongo, and his delegation at his office in Juba.
The vice president stressed that mining activities must be conducted in accordance with national laws and should directly contribute to the well-being and development of the people of South Sudan.
The meeting discussed geological surveys planned across all states to determine the country’s mineral potential, as well as updates on exploration processes involving companies interested in investing in the mining sector.
The Ministry also briefed the vice president on challenges facing the sector and efforts to attract investment.
According to the delegation, Shamrock Company is among the major companies seeking to invest in South Sudan’s mining sector. The company has agreed to construct three major roads and establish a gold refinery aimed at adding value to locally extracted minerals.
Prof. Igga thanked the delegation and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting responsible investment as part of efforts to strengthen and stabilise the national economy.
He, however, emphasised the need for the Ministry of Mining to ensure that investment in the sector remains regulated and that the country’s natural resources are developed for the benefit of its citizens.
