As South Sudan approaches the December polls, citizens have an important responsibility to protect peace, unity, and social cohesion. Elections are an important part of political participation, but they should never become a source of violence, division, or hatred among communities.
Political differences are normal in any society. Citizens may support different candidates, parties, or political ideas, and everyone should have the freedom to express those views peacefully. What matters is that political competition does not destroy relationships between citizens or communities.
South Sudan has experienced years of conflict and displacement, leaving many families and communities vulnerable. The country cannot afford a return to violence because of political disagreements. The December polls should instead provide an opportunity for citizens to participate peacefully and demonstrate their commitment to resolving differences through dialogue.
Citizens should reject hate speech, threats, intimidation, and violence. Social media users also have a responsibility to avoid spreading unverified information that could create fear or inflame tensions. Political leaders, community elders, religious leaders, and youth have an equally important role in encouraging restraint and peaceful participation.
Unity does not mean that everyone must support the same political party or candidate. It means recognising that political differences should not prevent citizens from living together peacefully and respecting one another’s rights.
Security institutions also have a responsibility to protect civilians and ensure that citizens can participate in political activities without fear. Law enforcement should treat all citizens fairly and operate within the law.
As the election period approaches, the message should be clear: South Sudan needs peace before, during, and after the polls. Citizens should protect their communities, respect differing political opinions, and refuse to be used to promote violence.
The future of the country belongs to all its citizens. By embracing peace, unity, and responsible political participation, South Sudanese can help create an environment in which elections contribute to stability rather than deepen existing divisions.
