ELECTION: Political Alliance party warns against election delay

By Yiep Joseph

The National Alliance of Political Parties in South Sudan has warned against delaying the December 22, 2026 general elections, urging leaders to end the transitional period.

The warning was contained in a political statement read by the alliance’s chairperson, Kornelio Kon Ngu, in Juba on October 8, 2026.

The alliance said amendments to transitional arrangements and electoral laws were intended to facilitate elections and establish elected institutions.

However, it expressed concern that ongoing political dialogue and closed-door meetings could lead to election postponement or an extension of the transitional period.

The coalition identified two possible scenarios: postponing the elections entirely or holding presidential elections alone while retaining the caretaker government.

It stressed that political dialogue should promote consensus rather than obstruct elections or extend the transition without a clear legal basis.

If elections are postponed, the alliance demands the dismissal of the caretaker government and its replacement with an inclusive national unity government.

It proposed that the new government serve for no more than two years, with a binding timetable for elections.

The alliance also called for outstanding provisions of the revitalised peace agreement to be implemented, particularly those concerning elections, the constitution, and security arrangements.

If only presidential elections are held, the coalition wants a clear timetable for remaining polls and continued power-sharing under the peace agreement.

The statement urged the government to prioritise salaries for civil servants and members of the armed forces while addressing outstanding arrears.

It argued that funds spent on prolonged political dialogue could instead help ease unpaid salary arrears and the rising cost of living.

The alliance appealed to the African Union, the United Nations, the UN Security Council, and international partners to protect the electoral process.

It reaffirmed its readiness to participate in the elections and respect the results, provided the polls are free, fair, transparent, and lawful.

“Elections are a right of the people, not a privilege granted by the authorities,” the statement said.
