Kapoeta North Commissioner calls for cattle protection, peaceful coexistence

By Lodu William Odiya

The Caretaker Commissioner of Kapoeta North County, David Nayee Lomor, has called on elders, youth, cattle keepers, traders, and community leaders to work collectively to protect cattle and promote lasting peace across Greater Kapoeta.

The Commissioner urged elders to guide the younger generation through traditional wisdom and responsible leadership while encouraging youth to uphold discipline, accountability, and their responsibilities in cattle keeping.

During the engagement, a community representative expressed concern that financial incentives are drawing some young people away from their traditional responsibility of helping elders care for cattle.

Meanwhile, elders appealed to the Commissioner and local authorities to introduce a registration system for traders to help distinguish those engaged in commercial activities from those expected to participate in cattle keeping in the camps.

David emphasised that cattle protection must go hand in hand with respect for human life, property, and peaceful coexistence.

He encouraged communities to resolve disputes through dialogue and established traditional and administrative mechanisms.

He further stressed the importance of preserving Toposa cultural heritage while ensuring that cattle remain a source of livelihood, pride, and community stability.

The Commissioner’s appeal underscores the need for collective responsibility, constructive dialogue, and cooperation between local authorities and communities to safeguard livelihoods and strengthen peace across Greater Kapoeta and Eastern Equatoria State.
