UNHCR to address South Sudanese refugee’s challenges in Egypt

The United Nations High Commission for Refugee’s Country Representative, Matthew Brook has vowed to address challenges facing South Sudanese refugees in Egypt.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Corporations unit yesterday, the remark came during a meeting between Akuei Bona Malual, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with the UNHCR Country Representative.

The meeting discussed ongoing cooperation between UNHCR and the government on refugees matters in general and the situation of South Sudanese Refugees in Egypt being forcefully deported against their will. 

The meeting also highlighted the need for humanitarian support for the South Sudanese Refugees in Egypt.

“UNHCR Country Representative promised to investigate and address the matter with the Egyptian government and both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in addressing Refugees and displacement challenges and supporting vulnerable communities in the diaspora as well as in South Sudan” the statement partly read.

In another development, the Ambassador also met with Daniel 

Bunnskog, Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in South Sudan.

Their discussions focused on a range of matters of mutual concern, including the current situation of wounded individuals receiving medical assistance through ICRC interventions, as well as issues related to international humanitarian law within the context of ongoing global initiatives.

The two sides further exchanged views on prospective visits by key development partners and reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation.
