WES governor offers scholarships to vulnerable students

By Sabri Dibaco

In a landmark event marking the opening of a new secondary school in Yambio, the governor of Western Equatoria State, Daniel Badagbu, has awarded scholarships to 10 students from vulnerable backgrounds.

Speaking during the inauguration of St. Paul Secondary School, Governor Badagbu said the scholarships are intended to support students from disadvantaged families, particularly girls, orphans, and academically promising learners.

“The government will sponsor 10 students, especially girls from vulnerable backgrounds, including orphans and talented students who can be identified. The reason is that we are leaving behind clever children who can contribute to the state,” he stated.

The governor emphasized the importance of inclusivity in leadership development, noting that opportunities are often limited to children from privileged families.

“Sons and daughters of leaders often become leaders themselves, while vulnerable children who could be better leaders are overlooked. We must identify and nurture the talent in all children in our society,” he added.

Governor Badagbu said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to investing in education and empowering young people to build a better future. He stressed that ensuring equal access to education remains a top priority.

“The government will make sure that education is not only for the advantaged but for all citizens, regardless of their background,” he said.

He encouraged students to stay focused on their studies and avoid comparing themselves to wealthier peers.

“Do not be afraid of mistakes; they are stepping stones to success. Stay curious, disciplined, and believe in your ability to achieve greatness. Your teachers guide you; your families support you, and your nation counts on you. Stand tall, work hard, and never give up,” he advised.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that the scholarships would ease the financial burden on their families and allow them to concentrate on their education.

Education officials, led by the Acting State Minister of Education, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward improving school retention and academic performance among learners from underprivileged backgrounds.

The governor also urged partners and well-wishers to support similar initiatives to strengthen the education sector in the state. He encouraged the beneficiaries to serve as role models in their communities and to work hard to achieve their goals.
