Two fuel tankers exploded on Thursday morning at Gudey Oil Station in Unity State, causing a fire whose origin remains unknown.
Unity State Minister of Information, Nyakenya Johannes Keah, confirmed the incident in an exclusive interview with No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper.
She stated that one of the tankers initially caught fire before the situation escalated.
The minister expressed that the relevant authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
“Yes, there is a fuel tanker that caught fire in the morning in the Unity oil field. So, the cause of it is not yet identified,” the minister confirmed.
“The cause has not yet been identified, and investigations are ongoing to determine what really happened,” she reiterated.
Keah added that authorities at the scene successfully extinguished the fire in the office and there were no casualties or injuries reported.
According to the minister, the tankers belonged to a private investor, a businessman.
The explosion occurred near facilities operated by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), where other fuel tankers are typically stationed.
The situation is now calm, with state authorities continuing their investigation into the incident.
Efforts to reach Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC) officials for comment were not successful at the press time.
