The government has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability as the country prepares for the December elections.
The assurance was made yesterday during a meeting between a government spokesperson and officials from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
According to a statement extended to the media, Ateny Wek Ateny, Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, assured UNMISS representatives of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote peace and security across the country.
“In a statement to the media, Hon. Ateny reassured the senior UNMISS official of government efforts towards peace and security,” the statement noted.
He also emphasised the government’s readiness for the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2026.
The remarks were made during a visit by Graham Maitland, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in South Sudan, to the Ministry’s offices in Juba.
During the meeting, both officials discussed key issues, including cooperation between the Government of South Sudan and UNMISS, as well as matters related to peace, development, and national security.
Maitland, in turn, reaffirmed UNMISS’s commitment to working closely with the government in support of peacebuilding efforts in the country.
