By Chol D. Johnson

The government of South Sudan has announced plans to officially celebrate International Labour Day on May 1 in the capital, Juba.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, the Minister of Labour, Anthony Lino Makana, said the government is fully prepared to join the international community in recognising the contributions and rights of workers.

“The Ministry of Labour wishes to inform the general public, stakeholders, and development partners that the Republic of South Sudan will join the global community in commemorating International Labour Day for the year 2026,” Makana said.

The national celebration will be held at Juba National Stadium in Juba under the theme “Empowering Workers, Developing South Sudan.”

Makana noted that the event follows a high-level endorsement by the Service Cluster during a meeting held on April 21, chaired by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol. He said the vice president reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring an inclusive and successful celebration.

Describing the occasion as “historically significant,” Makana emphasised that the commemoration marks the inaugural national recognition of Labour Day in South Sudan.

The event is expected to bring together workers, employers, government institutions, and development partners from across the country. President Salva Kiir Mayardit is scheduled to deliver a keynote address alongside other national leaders.

Activities will include cultural performances showcasing South Sudan’s heritage, as well as live coverage on television and radio.

Makana reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting workers’ welfare, describing them as the backbone of national development as the country continues its path toward peace, stability, and economic transformation.

He called on trade unions, employers’ associations, civil society organisations, and the wider public to participate in the celebrations. The ministry also announced that free online registration is open for those wishing to attend the event at the national stadium.
