Yambio youth elect committee to organise 2026 inter-area football tournament

Youth leaders, football administrators, fans, and community representatives from across Yambio County have elected a new leadership committee to oversee the organisation of the 2026 Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament.

The election, held on Wednesday at the Youth Centre in Yambio, brought together stakeholders from various areas of the county in a process described as peaceful, transparent, and democratic.

Speaking after the election, Yambio County Youth Leader David Wandu welcomed the outcome, saying the process reflected the commitment of young people to dialogue, participation, and community ownership.

“The youth approached us seeking guidance on how to organise the tournament in a transparent and inclusive manner. We encouraged dialogue among all stakeholders, and they agreed to follow the will of the majority. Today, they have successfully elected their leaders,” Wandu said.

He noted that the newly elected committee will be responsible for planning, managing, and coordinating all activities related to the tournament while ensuring accountability and transparency.

According to Wandu, reforms were introduced following concerns raised by some youth over limited participation in previous decision-making processes.

He emphasised the important role of sports in promoting peace, unity, and social cohesion.

“Sports bring people together, promote peace, and strengthen understanding among communities. It remains one of the most effective tools for peaceful coexistence,” he said.

Wandu appealed to government institutions, development partners, the business community, and individuals of goodwill to provide financial and moral support for the tournament.

Yambio County Sports Inspector Elisa Mukasi congratulated the newly elected committee and urged its members to build on the achievements of previous administrations while addressing existing challenges.

Mukasi praised the peaceful conduct of the election and expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to strengthen the organisation of the competition.

“The Inter-Area Tournament plays a vital role in promoting peace, unity, and youth engagement. It also helps reduce crime by keeping young people actively involved in sports,” he said.

“When football activities are taking place peacefully, it is a sign of peace, unity, and stability within the community.”

Mukasi further called on the committee to prioritise transparency, teamwork, and effective coordination throughout the planning and implementation process.

Member of Parliament Biko James Bage also commended the youth for conducting a peaceful election, describing it as a demonstration of democratic values and civic responsibility.

“I am proud of how the youth came together to elect a team that will lead the Inter-Area Tournament. This competition continues to unite young people from different communities,” Bage said.

He encouraged development partners, donors, and well-wishers to support the initiative to enhance its impact and long-term sustainability.

Meanwhile, the newly elected Chairperson of the 2026 Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament, Sabir Isaac Gbuku, pledged to promote unity, consultation, and teamwork throughout his tenure.

Gbuku thanked youth leaders, stakeholders, and community members for the confidence placed in him and called on all candidates, including those who were unsuccessful, to work together for the success of the tournament.

“Our priority is to consult widely and ensure that every stakeholder is heard. We will engage the Yambio Local Football Association, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and other sports administrators before making key decisions,” he said.

He added that the committee intends to harmonise views from all stakeholders before convening a general meeting to agree on the way forward.

Acknowledging past disagreements among football stakeholders, Gbuku said the election presents an opportunity for a fresh start and renewed cooperation within the local football community.

He expressed optimism that the tournament could begin as early as next week, subject to agreement among stakeholders, to allow enough time for the competition to be completed successfully.

“I am here to learn, to listen, and to work with others. With unity and cooperation, we can deliver a peaceful and successful tournament for our youth and the wider community,” Gbuku said.

The Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament is one of the county’s most popular sporting events, bringing together teams from different communities and serving as a platform for youth engagement, talent development, and peacebuilding.
