Naduru fans mourn slain coach George Kobo with silent tribute

By Sabri Dibaco

Football supporters from Naduru residential area paid an emotional tribute to their late head coach, George Kobo, during the team’s final group-stage match against Sodia, days after he was shot dead in an incident reportedly involving a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer.

The atmosphere at the football ground was strikingly different from previous matches. Supporters, who are known for creating a lively atmosphere with drums, whistles, and chants, watched the game in complete silence.

Dressed entirely in black, the fans stood and sat quietly throughout the match in memory of the coach they described as a dedicated mentor who devoted his life to developing football in the community.

Although Naduru won by 2 goals to zero, many supporters said the match was less about the result and more about honouring the man who had inspired the team.

“We came here not to celebrate football today but to remember our coach,” said supporter James Mawa. “Coach George Kobo was like a father to many of the players. Our silence speaks louder than any drum or whistle.”

Another fan, Maram Joseph, said the absence of songs and celebrations reflected the pain the community continues to feel.

“Whenever Naduru played, we always sang and danced from the first whistle to the last. Today, we chose silence because our hearts are still broken. We will never forget what Coach George did for our youth,” she said.

Peter Wando called on authorities to ensure justice is served.

“We are mourning someone who dedicated himself to keeping young people together through football. We want those responsible for his death to be held accountable so that his family and the football community can find justice,” he said.

The emotional tribute followed Naduru’s previous match after the coach’s death, when supporters said they believed his spirit remained with the team as they fought to a draw.

Players observed the solemn mood as fans watched every minute of the match without the usual cheering that has long characterised Naduru’s home support.

Coach Kobo, after retiring from active football, coached teams like his former team, Al Wahida, and also guided Naduru to last year’s inter-area trophy.

After today’s game, they have booked their place in the round of sixteen, leading the table with 7 points.

The death of Coach George Kobo has shocked the football fraternity in Western Equatoria State, with players, officials, and supporters continuing to express grief over the loss of a respected football figure.

Coach George Kobo was the head coach of the Naduru area, a community team competing in the ongoing 7th edition of the inter-area in Yambio.

He was reportedly shot dead by a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer in Yambio, although authorities have yet to provide full details surrounding the incident publicly.

His death has prompted widespread mourning among football supporters, players, and residents, many of whom remember him for mentoring young athletes and promoting peace through sport. Calls for a transparent investigation and accountability continue as the football community seeks justice while honouring his legacy.
