EDITORIAL: Government should help farmers to improve food production

Agriculture remains the backbone of South Sudan’s economy and the primary source of livelihood for the majority of its citizens.

Despite having vast areas of fertile land, abundant water resources, and a favourable climate, the country continues to struggle with food insecurity. Every year, many families rely on food aid while millions of hectares of productive land remain uncultivated.

This situation highlights the urgent need for the government to strengthen its support for farmers and increase food production.

The government should invest more in agriculture by providing farmers with quality seeds, fertilisers, modern farming tools, and access to affordable credit.

Many farmers still depend on traditional farming methods, which limit productivity and make it difficult to produce enough food for both household consumption and the market.

With improved farming inputs and training, farmers can increase crop yields and contribute significantly to national food security.

Another important area that requires attention is infrastructure. Poor roads make it difficult for farmers to transport their produce to markets, resulting in high post-harvest losses and low incomes.

The government should improve rural roads, construct storage facilities, and establish irrigation systems to support farming throughout the year. These investments would encourage more people to engage in agriculture and reduce dependence on imported food.

Extension services should also be strengthened. Agricultural experts can educate farmers on modern farming techniques, pest control, soil conservation, and climate-smart agriculture. Such knowledge would help farmers adapt to changing weather conditions and improve the quality and quantity of their harvests.

Supporting farmer cooperatives would also make it easier for producers to access markets, financing, and agricultural information.

Furthermore, ensuring peace and security is essential for agricultural development. Farmers cannot cultivate their land effectively when conflicts force them to flee their homes or abandon their farms. A stable and peaceful environment will encourage farming activities, attract investment in agriculture, and boost rural development.

South Sudan has the potential to become self-sufficient in food production and even export agricultural products to neighbouring countries.

Achieving this goal requires strong political commitment, adequate funding, and effective policies that prioritise agriculture.

By empowering farmers with the resources, infrastructure, training, and security they need, the government can reduce hunger, create employment opportunities, strengthen the economy, and improve the lives of millions of citizens. Investing in agriculture today is an investment in South Sudan’s future prosperity and long-term stability.
