Western Equatoria State (WES) Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa has warned political and armed groups against activities that could undermine peace in Tambura and Nagero counties as South Sudan prepares for the 2026 elections.
The governor said authorities had restored calm in parts of Tambura but acknowledged that the security situation remained fragile in some areas.
He expressed concern over reported meetings and mobilisation involving members of the SPLM-IO, as well as security developments in Jebel Nduu, Mapuse, Ngoni, Sue, and Bandala.
The governor also said authorities were investigating reports that about 30 people had joined former Western Equatoria State Governor Alfred Futuyo on Saturday.
He said the government was seeking to establish where the group came from and the circumstances surrounding its reported movement and activities.
The governor warned political and armed groups against regrouping in ways that could threaten the peace in Tambura and Nagero, particularly in areas where civilians have previously experienced insecurity.
“I want to warn those forces trying to gather themselves again to disrupt the peace around Tambura and the peace in Nagero, especially those who were terrorising our civilians for food in Bandala,” the governor said.
He stressed that his administration would not allow insecurity to return to communities across the state, warning that instability could also affect preparations for the upcoming elections.
The governor called on political actors, armed groups, and communities to pursue peaceful engagement and avoid actions that could destabilise the state.
“My message is we are here for peace. We don’t need war. Western Equatoria must be peaceful,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of keeping roads across the state open to allow civilians and traders to move freely and ensure the movement of essential goods.
“The roads of Western Equatoria must be accessible, and our people should be moving on them,” the governor added.
The governor urged all political groups, armed elements, and communities to maintain peace and stability as South Sudan moves toward the 2026 elections.
