Western Equatoria State Governor Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa has directed the deployment of additional police officers to Yambio, Masia, and Pozuo open markets to strengthen security and protect shops, traders, and the wider business community.
The governor issued the directive after visiting the markets on Tuesday, accompanied by the state minister of commerce and trade, the commissioner of Yambio County, the mayor of Yambio, the commissioner of the revenue authority, and other government officials.
The visit aimed at assessing the current situation in the markets, strengthening cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce, and listening to traders about challenges affecting their businesses.
Traders raised concerns, including security, access to the markets, business organisation and arrangements, as well as challenges particularly affecting women traders.
Speaking after the visit, Governor Badagbu said maintaining security in the markets is a priority to prevent theft and other criminal activities targeting shops and businesses.
He said new police deployments have already been made in the markets to provide security and protect traders and their property.
The governor also said the state government will continue working with the Chamber of Commerce, traders, and other stakeholders to address challenges related to market organisation, access, security, and concerns affecting women traders.
Governor Badagbu said the market visit has given the state government an understanding of the challenges facing traders and will guide further government directives and action.
