Torit County Caretaker Commissioner and Mayor of Torit, Eddy William Ponsiano, denied reports circulating on social media that he ordered the arrest of members of the Murle business community in Torit town.
In a statement from his office press, Ponsiano said the individuals arrested were business operators who had allegedly failed to clear their annual business license fees, insisting that the action was related to business regulations and not their ethnic identity.
“Why should we target the Murle? They are our people. They are bringing development and business to us. Let’s talk peace, not counter-attacking,” Ponsiano said.
The caretaker commissioner called on members of the public to reject messages that could create division and undermine peaceful coexistence among communities.
He urged those opposed to peace to change their attitude and instead support efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development in Torit County and Eastern Equatoria State.
Ponsiano further emphasised the importance of unity and peaceful coexistence among different communities living and doing business in Torit.
