The trial of Dr. Riek Machar and seven co-accused has been adjourned to Friday after the prosecution submitted a written response.
The prosecution’s response addressed concerns raised over reported threats to the safety of defense lawyers and the eight accused persons.
Presiding Judge Dr. James Alala Deng said the court is interrogating the reported threats as it considers the issues raised during the proceedings.
Following the prosecution’s submission, the defense team requested an opportunity to comment on the response in writing.
The defense said it should be given time to study the prosecution’s response and provide its position before the court proceeds further.
Judge Stephen Simon subsequently adjourned the session to Friday, September 25, 2026, when the defense is expected to respond to the prosecution’s submission.
Dr. Riek Machar, South Sudan’s former First Vice President and leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition, is among eight people facing trial in the case.
The proceedings have attracted significant public attention because of Machar’s prominent political role and his involvement in South Sudan’s peace process.
The charges and allegations against the accused remain matters for determination by the court, and all accused persons are entitled to due process and a fair hearing.
The next hearing on Friday is expected to allow the defense to formally respond to the prosecution’s written submission before the court considers the way forward.
