President Salva Kiir has directed the caretaker leadership of the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs to strengthen security preparations ahead of South Sudan’s scheduled general elections on December 22.
In a statement that was released by the presidential press unit yesterday, Kiir gave the directive during a meeting with the Caretaker Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Gen. Ayor Akuoch Anok, and his deputy, Gen. Marial Chanuong Yol.
“The President emphasised the need for effective security arrangements to create an environment in which citizens can participate in the electoral process peacefully and without fear,” the statement partly read.
Gen. Akuoch was appointed caretaker Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs following the dissolution of the transitional government on September 22, while Gen. Chanuong was appointed his deputy.
“President Kiir, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening institutions responsible for national security and improving the welfare of members of the organised forces,” the statement continued.
The president’s directive comes at a time when government institutions and other stakeholders are intensifying preparations for the December elections.
Security has emerged as a key component of the preparations, particularly as authorities work to ensure that citizens are able to exercise their civic rights in a peaceful environment.
The two defense leaders assured the president of their commitment to advancing security-sector reforms and strengthening discipline and professionalism within the national army.
They also pledged to support efforts aimed at transforming the SSPDF into a unified and effective national force capable of carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
According to the press unit, the meeting is part of wider government preparations following the establishment of a caretaker administration to oversee state affairs ahead of the elections.
The caretaker administration was appointed after President Kiir dissolved the transitional government and appointed new national and subnational officials.
With less than three months remaining before the scheduled polls, the government faces the task of maintaining security while allowing political and electoral activities to proceed.
The defense leadership is therefore expected to play a central role in coordinating security measures, maintaining discipline among forces, and supporting a peaceful environment throughout the electoral period.
The December 22 elections are expected to mark a major stage in South Sudan’s political transition, with preparations continuing across the country.
