EDITORIAL: Political parties must embrace fair and transparent democracy

As South Sudan continues to strengthen its democratic institutions, political parties should promote fairness, transparency, accountability, and inclusion within their own structures.

Internal democracy is essential because parties play a central role in shaping the country’s political future.

Leadership elections, appointments, consultations, and decision-making should follow party constitutions and established procedures. Members should have equal opportunities to participate, express their views, contest positions, and choose their leaders without intimidation, discrimination, or exclusion.

Transparency is especially important during internal elections and leadership changes. Clear procedures can reduce mistrust, prevent unnecessary divisions, and strengthen confidence among party members.

Political parties should also respect different opinions. Constructive criticism and peaceful debate should be encouraged rather than treated as disloyalty. Such openness can help parties improve their leadership and policies.

Ultimately, fair and transparent internal democracy can strengthen political parties and contribute to a more accountable, inclusive, and democratic South Sudan.
