By Louis Loku

The Secretary-General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Cde. Dr. Akol Paul Kordit, has met with the European Union Ambassador to South Sudan, Pelle Enarsson, to discuss the country’s ongoing electoral preparations.

During the meeting, Dr. Kordit reaffirmed the position of SPLM Chairman and President of the Republic, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, emphasising the party’s commitment to allowing grassroots members to choose their representatives through transparent primary elections.

According to the Secretary-General, the party remains committed to strengthening its internal democratic processes and ensuring that members have the opportunity to participate in selecting candidates ahead of the elections.

Ambassador Enarsson said he had been following media reports about the SPLM’s ongoing primary elections and its efforts to field candidates.

He explained that these developments prompted him to meet with party officials and learn more about the preparations firsthand.

The Ambassador said the engagement was part of a broader European Union assessment of how different components of South Sudan’s political system are preparing for the democratic process.

As part of the assessment, Enarsson said he intended to meet with as many political party leaders as possible, visit the field to observe preparations, and monitor ongoing inter-party dialogues.

He described the current political period as critical for South Sudan, noting that the next two to three weeks would be decisive in shaping the country’s future and history.

The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by political parties and other stakeholders to prepare for the country’s upcoming elections.

Dr. Kordit reiterated the SPLM’s commitment to peace, stability, and national unity, stressing the party’s determination to support an environment conducive to peaceful, free, fair, and credible elections for all South Sudanese.
