Abyei Administrative Area (AAA) has declared every Friday a public holiday dedicated to agricultural activities with the aim of promoting productivity and supporting local farmers.
The circular titled “Agriculture Day” will take effect on June 27, 2025, and continue until September 26, 2025.
According to Circular No. (5) 2025, signed by Secretary General John Ajang Kiir, the decision applies to all government institutions, departments, counties, commissions, and other administrative bodies within the Abyei Special Administrative Area (SAA).
The circular emphasizes that the initiative is designed to encourage community participation in farming activities and ensure a successful harvest season. However, essential services such as hospitals, schools, CPCs, and the private sector are exempt from the holiday and will continue to operate as usual.
It further states that the regular work schedule will resume on Friday, October 3, 2025, following the conclusion of the designated agricultural period.
This move is viewed as a strategic effort to strengthen food security and empower local communities through direct involvement in agricultural development.
South Sudan’s agricultural sector is vital, employing approximately 95% of the population and holding significant potential for growth, despite facing challenges such as conflict and climate change.
