Medics in Aweil West County in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr El Gazal state said that cases of diarrhea have increased as a result of poor hygiene.
Speaking to the media, Lual Khamis Lual, the Deputy Director of Nyamlel Hospital in Aweil West County, said eight severe diarrhea cases have been reported this month.
Khamis said the cases are attributable to poor hygiene, such as poor waste disposal that attracted flies that later contaminated food and other edibles.
“The problem is that many young women and girls never wash the vegetables well; they just pick from the market’s vegetable sellers and never wash them well. Such unwell-cooked foods contribute to stomach problems, which are attributable to the rise of the diarrhea cases,” said Khamis.
Khamis advised people to properly dispose of their waste as a remedy to cholera and other diseases that may arise due to poor hygiene.
