High Level of Insecurity in South Sudan?

The level of insecurity in South Sudan has grown to a point where the government seems unable to contain it. Civilians are being targeted and killed, and the lack of accountability for these atrocities is unacceptable. There is no reason for this violence.

Consider the recent killings in Lokiliri payam, where a pregnant mother and her husband were murdered in cold blood. As if that wasn’t horrific enough, five children were also abducted. This is a profound violation of human rights. Such atrocities would not occur if there were a truly functioning governing system in place.

Citizens deserve to be protected from all forms of violence and abuse. The constant fear and lack of security make no sense. Why are people who defect from the government and form rebel groups still seen as part of a “unity peace”? Is it the government that is fighting the civilians, or something else entirely?

The fact that rebellions and attacks on innocent civilians can happen in the presence of the government points to a failing administration. Our country is suffering from widespread insecurity, a failed economy, poor infrastructure, and a broken education system. Our hospitals are inadequate, and we see no improvement in any sector, only the constant shuffling of officials from one government institution to another. This is a system that promotes corruption, where those in power are free to loot and enjoy the spoils.

Despite our nation being under a democratic rule, we continue in a system with no accountability. The frustration caused by this widespread insecurity is immense, and it’s heartbreaking to see citizens continue to be killed while no suspects are held accountable. Many South Sudanese fled the country during the 2013 and 2016 wars, seeking refuge in neighboring countries where they now suffer in camps. Why must the remaining citizens be killed as well?

I urge the government to restore and maintain total peace and to protect its civilians. To the youth, I say: do not follow anyone who is rebelling. You have a future, and you should not be used as a tool to fulfill someone else’s interests.

I condemn this attack on civilians in the strongest possible terms. The government must act to protect the lives of its people from being shot and looted.

God protect South Sudan.

Be the witness!
