Wrestling initiative promote peace says Jonglei governor

By Alan Clement
Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok has underscored the role of traditional wrestling in shaping the future of young people by offering a platform for mentorship, unity, and drug abuse prevention.
In a message through the State Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Kuony Yien Nyuon, during the launch of the Peace and Unity Wrestling Competition at Tiengkuei Field (Meny-Meny) in Bor, the Governor said the initiative was designed to nurture young talents while addressing pressing social challenges.
“The primary aim of this initiative is to uncover and nurture wrestling talents within the communities and their neighbors. Many of our youths possess exceptional abilities but have lacked the platforms and mentorship to showcase their skills beyond the state. Today, we take a bold step toward bridging that gap,” the Governor’s press unit quoted him as saying.
This sentiment was echoed by Bor County Commissioner, Samuel Ateny Pech, who stressed that the wrestling tournament carries a broader social message beyond sport. “This match serves as more than just a wrestling event. It is a tool for addressing critical societal challenges such as drug abuse, and for promoting values of selflessness, unity, and charity,” he said in a statement.
The Governor’s press unit affirmed that the competition aligns with Governor Riek’s broader vision to use cultural sports as a vehicle for peacebuilding and youth development. “This initiative reflects the Governor’s commitment to empowering young people and fostering unity through traditional platforms,” he said in a statement.
The event was supported by Ladder Forwarders Company Ltd, which presented a trophy to the winning teams in an event which drew participation from neighboring counties and states, with Bor County securing a 5–0 victory over Yirol East County in the opening match.
The competition is expected to continue with local and inter-state teams vying for the championship in line with the Governor’s vision of creating opportunities for the youth to explore their potential and contribute positively to society.
