Authorities in Aweil South County in Northern Bahr el Gazal State (NBGs) have on Friday engaged partners on the ground to discuss security and climate impacts.

This discussion is intended to help the impoverished communities due to climate impacts, as some areas within the county are experiencing flooding.

Information director in the office of the commissioner, Simon Lual Buk, told this publication on Friday that they have held a symposium with the organizations on climate impacts.

Besides flooding, he expressed that some of the areas are experiencing drought in highland areas, which would result in hunger.

“We have held meetings with organizations such as IRC and FILDA organizations plus other aid agencies, and our aim is to ensure that our local population are helped, as some people have lost crops due to droughts, which made the crops wither, and some people are also getting the difficulties in flood-related issues,” Lual said.

“We also invited 9 payam administrators and county officials, and we all brainstormed on how best such people who are vulnerable can get supported, as some crops are withering due to drought, and also flooding is a disaster, so we have to engage the partners for support,” he added.

Lual also expressed that the issue of insecurity is life-threatening, revealing that a pregnant woman was attacked while sleeping in her tukul by gangsters last week and is now hospitalized in Aweil Town.

“The crimes are on the rise, and they are being done by young boys, as they attacked the woman who is pregnant and kicked her in the stomach and now is suffering,” he said.

The director added that 18 suspects among the gang members have been apprehended over the attack on the pregnant woman.

He added that the night patrol is being enforced by the authorities in the county in order to curtail the rising insecurity.
