Special court adjourns trials on Nasir incident to Monday

By Yiep Joseph

The Special Court has adjourned the trials of Puot Kang and seven co-accused to Monday, 6 October 2025.

During the sixth session conducted on Friday, the investigator started with the presentations of the statements of the accused, including the suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

The session also allowed the accused to respond to the statement presented, whether it is solely theirs as read out.

In addition, the prosecutors submitted four key documents named as Prosecution Documents.

These include an executive sanction for Dr. Machar’s arrest, an authorization letter for National Security, a ministerial order, and a document lifting the immunity of an MP, Gatwech Lam Puoch.

Dr. Geri Raimondo from the defense team reiterated that the prosecution documents were unprocedural and hence illegal to be applied.

He objected to the document; however, Deng Achuil Adija from the prosecution side said the documents were in line with the constitution, hence applicable.

Although the defense team objected to the legality and the procedures of the prosecution documents, the presiding judge admitted all four documents into the court record.

After presentations of the statements from the accused and the prosecution document, the Presiding Judge of the special court, Dr. James Alala Deng, pronounced the court hearing adjourned to the coming Monday.

The judge then adjourned the hearing until Monday, October 6, for the prosecution to present further evidences or document.

“The court is going to be adjourned up to the coming Monday at the same time,” Dr. Alala declared.

In the previous sessions, the special court affirmed their jurisdiction and the competence to try Dr. Machar and the other seven accused.

In September, the government filed six charges, including treason and murder, against Dr. Machar and seven others in connection with the March 2025 Nasir incident.

Dr. Joseph Geng Akec, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, announced in a press briefing that the government’s investigative committee has concluded its probe and filed charges against Dr. Machar and his allies.

The accused, including Dr. Riek Machar, Mr. Puot Kang Choi, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, Mr. Mam Pal Dhuor, Mr. Gatwich Lam Puoch, Brig. Gen. Camilo Gatmai Kel, Mr. Mading Riek Yak, and Mr. Dominic Gatrgok Riek of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army–In Opposition (SPLM/A-IO), are alleged to have coordinated with the White Army in attacks on the Nasir barracks from 3 to 7 March 2025.
