The leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has revealed that it will hold a caucus leadership meeting ahead of the elections.

The revelation was made during the meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who is the SPLM chairperson, and Dr. Akol Paul Kordit, the party’s secretary general.

According to the statement obtained from the presidential press unit, Dr. Akol Paul Kordit revealed that the party will conduct a caucus leadership meeting to discuss the current political situation.

However, the statement did not specify the exact time frame for the conduct of the meeting, including the venue.

“The Secretary General announced that the SPLM will hold a caucus leadership meeting to discuss the current political environment and plan on how to strengthen the base of its founding values of liberation,” the statement partly read.

Dr. Akol emphasized the commitment of the SPLM to dialogue with all political parties who are signatories to the Revitalized Peace Agreement. This, he said, is key to achieving a peaceful, united, and democratic South Sudan.

He appealed to all political forces in the country to embrace dialogue as a necessary means of establishing a unified and peaceful country.

On his part, according to the statement, President Kiir reiterated that the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) stands to engage in dialogue with the other political parties as the election approaches.

Earlier this week, the head of state acknowledged the severe hardships facing the citizens and pledged renewed government action as South Sudan steps into the new year 2026 under mounting political and economic strain.

However, he praised citizens for enduring the hardships that had tested the country’s social fabric, describing their resilience as a cornerstone for national progress.

Kiir urged citizens to renew their commitment to peace, unity, and hard work, stressing that these values remain essential for the stability and development of the country.

The country’s general elections are due to be held on 22 December 2026, the first since independence.

This comes at a time when the country is preparing to conduct its first-ever elections since gaining independence.
