Civil Society Activist urges CBOs to refrain from political interference

Civil Society Activist have urged Community Base Organizations (CBOs) to refrain from political interference and work according to RRC mandate.

Speaking to media outlet on Friday, South Sudan Civil Society Alliances’ (SSCAS) deputy Chairperson, Dabek Mabior stated that Community Base Organisations (CBOs) must refrain from political affairs.

“CBOs must refrain from political interference and from involving themselves in community affairs that fall outside their mandate” Mabior stated.

Mabior said that the community associations should strictly abide by the mandate and constitution of the association.

He mentioned that association which involved politicians and generals in the army to be the executives of the associations in the CBOS should be restricted to RRC laws.

“We believe these matters should be addressed in strict reference to the laws governing Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and community associations” he mentioned.

This statement followed Wol Dhieu Akujang, Chief Registrar of NGOs, Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) issued letter to Chairperson Twic East Community Association (TECA).

The TECA, RRC certificate, was registered on 19th February 2021, as a non-profit and non-political Association, in accordance with the NGO 2016.

Based on resolution dated 11% October 2025, title “Withdraw confidence in Deng Dau Deng Malek, MP for Twic East”, by TECA as more political than humanitarian.

The activity constitutes a violation of the NGOs Act, 2016. Consequently, where the Office of the Chief Registrar of NGOs revokes TECA’s registration certificate.

“We ask the leadership of TECA to hand over the RRC certificate and the constitution to the Office of the Chief Registrar of NGOs” Dhieu commented.

Furthermore, Mabior said that the failure to effectively implement and enforce RRC laws has significantly contributed to the organization of such activities.

He said according to the law, the RRC has right to revoke the certificate of registration, if there is evidence of political interference.

Mabior said that the mixing of civil society affairs with political party activities, falls outside the lawful mandate of civil community association.

He mentioned that association which involved politicians and generals in the army to be the executives of the associations in the CBOS should be restrict to RRC laws.

“We believe these matters should be addressed in strict reference to the laws governing Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and community associations” Mabior mentioned.

He urged the community association to play its moral role in promoting peaceful coexistence among communities and in resolving differences.

Mabior underscored that unity promote, protect the cultural values and prevent the infiltration of harmful practices that undermine the culture.
