Dog bites result to two death cases in Yei

By James Innocent

Two people have died following an attack by a suspected rabid dog in Ombasi Boma, Yei River County, local authorities and family members confirmed.

The victims were identified as a 30-year-old woman, Una Charity, and her father-in-law. According to the woman’s husband, Moses Andu, who works with a humanitarian organization in the area, the incident occurred when a wild dog attacked his father at their home.

Mr. Andu said his wife intervened while trying to rescue the older man, during which she was bitten on the hand by the dog.

Both victims were rushed to Yei Civil Hospital, where they received initial treatment, including anti-rabies medication. However, the father-in-law succumbed to his injuries several weeks later.

Ms. Charity reportedly remained under medical care for nearly two months after the incident.

Her condition worsened over time, with the bitten hand becoming paralyzed. She was later readmitted to hospital, where she died on Monday morning.

A medical official at Yei Civil Hospital, Towongo Ronald, confirmed that the woman’s death was linked to complications arising from the dog bite.

He warned that bites from suspected rabid dogs are extremely dangerous and can be fatal if treatment is delayed or incomplete.

“Dog bites, especially from unvaccinated or wild animals, pose a serious risk to human life,” Mr. Ronald said. “Immediate and full medical attention is critical.”

Authorities have previously cautioned residents against keeping dogs and other animals without proper vaccination, citing public health concerns.

The deaths have shocked residents of Yei River County, with community members describing the incident as unprecedented in the town.

Local leaders are calling for increased public awareness, stricter control of stray animals, and improved access to timely medical care to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
