Health Minister Calls for Government-Led Strategy to Tackle Health Challenges

By Chol D. Johnson

Sarah Cleto Rial, National Minister of Health, has called for an urgent and comprehensive government-led strategy to address critical health challenges facing South Sudan.

In a statement issued Thursday by the Ministry’s press unit, Cleto stressed the need for stronger government leadership to confront persistent problems in the health sector, including high maternal mortality, poor nutrition, looting of health facilities, and weak medical supply chains.

She said sustained international support for the country’s health programs will depend on increased financial commitment from the government. According to the minister, development partners are more likely to maintain their assistance when there is clear domestic investment and accountability.

Cleto emphasized the importance of implementing reforms in healthcare financing, supply management, staffing, and community engagement. She noted that a clear and actionable plan is necessary to ensure meaningful progress within the remaining program timeframe.

“Together, with strengthened commitment and strategic action, we can turn the tide on health challenges and build a resilient healthcare system for our people,” she said.

The minister made the remarks during a meeting with the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP), the Health Sector Transformation Project’s Project Management Unit (HSTP PMU), and development partners. The briefing focused on recent developments and strategic initiatives shaping the future of healthcare delivery in the country.

Officials presented updates on the Malaria Department’s goals, objectives, vision and mission, as well as a review of HIV and tuberculosis programs and their integration with other health services under the Health Sector Transformation Project.

Cleto also received a briefing on findings from the recent Implementation Support Mission, which highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen health systems and improve service delivery nationwide.
