Ministry of Finance and Planning has pledged support to the National Elections Commission(NEC) of ahead of the December democratic general election this year.
The ministry’s Department of Communication and Media emphasized that Finance minister, Salvatore Garang Mabiordit yesterday, met with a team from the National Elections Commission led by its chairperson, Prof. Abednego Akok Kachuol.
“Minister Salvatore emphasized his commitment to support the National Elections Commission by availing the necessary resources need for the successful conduct of general elections slated for December this year” the statement partly read.
While addressing the media, Abednego stated that the courtesy visit was to the Minister to discuss the activities of the country’s electoral body as the general elections scheduled for December looms.
He briefed the Minister about the preparations and progress made by the National Elections Commission in setting the ground for the first elections to be conducted in South Sudan.
South Sudan’s general election is scheduled for 22 December 2026, marking the country’s first national vote since independence in 2011 and repeated postponements due to civil war and political deadlock.
Voters will elect the president, national and state assemblies under a system mixing constituency and proportional representation.
Preparations are underway amid ongoing conflict, peace deal implementation challenges, and opposition concerns about fairness and security ahead of the polls.
In December 2025, NEC leadership declared its readiness to conduction election as stated in the roadmap and as agreed by the parties to the peace agreement.
The Commission informed the public that the country will use the 2010 constituencies to conduction the elections in 2026.
NEC decision followed the recent declaration by the parties to the 2018 peace agreement to move the election forward in 2026 despites pending requirement such as population census and the constitution.
