Civil Society Network condemns the resumed military hostilities in Akobo

By Peter Kuol Kuch

The Jonglei Society network in Jonglei State has condemned the resumed military operations in AKobo County in Eastern Part of Jonglei this week that it’s prolonging the agony of the civilians.

In the recent report, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition SPA-IO and South Sudan people’s defense forces SSPDF engaged in a military operation in Akobo in Jonglei State leading to massive displacement, and innocent killing.

The Jonglei Civil Society network reported that the ongoing hostilities in Akobo, an area first affected by the previous conflict, would inflict the civilians and would spark more displacements which will encourage eminent vulnerability of the civilians.

“We are concerned about the fact that the military confrontation among the major parties to the 2018 peace deal widens the gap in the ongoing peace consultation.” the statement read.

According to the statement, the wars waged among the major parties to the 2018 Peace agreement undermines the peace efforts by the International Community and other regional bodies such as the African Union.

“We therefore appeal for an end to the hostilities in Akobo and call upon the political leadership of the SPM-IO and SPM_IG to urgently agree on the amicable resolution of this conflict,” it reads.

Jonglei civil Society network is urging the warring parties to cease the hostilities and find a durable resolution of the ongoing conflict and to allow the safe settlement of the residents in  Akobo.

Last month, the South Sudan people’s defense forces took control of Akobo which shortly encouraged the internally displaced persons to return to their homes and took refuge following government’s control.
