The South Sudan Artists Union (SSAU) has officially welcomed the release of international musician John Frog following his recent arrest by security personnel.
In an exclusive interview with No. 1 Citizen Daily Newspaper, SSAU representative Nyambura Kenyi clarified that the incident was not a targeted confrontation.
Instead, he described it as a “communication misunderstanding” that escalated unexpectedly between the artist and security officers on duty.
“There was just a misunderstanding between the personnel on duty; they did not understand each other, and that was the reason behind the incident,” Kenyi explained.
Kenyi confirmed that the matter has since been resolved peacefully following discussions with the relevant authorities.
However, he revealed that the altercation resulted in physical harm, noting that a soldier involved in the incident sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
“We still have that soldier in the hospital, and we will continue to monitor his condition over the coming days,” Kenyi said.
Addressing the root cause of such tensions, Kenyi noted that security personnel at checkpoints often work under high-stress conditions.
He urged artists and entertainers to remain professional and cooperative during encounters with law enforcement.
Respecting the law, following standard procedures at checkpoints for identification, always carrying and presenting valid ID documents when requested, being a professional, and identifying oneself clearly to avoid unnecessary escalation.
Kenyi noted that while the SSAU has previously reached agreements with security authorities to protect artists traveling at night, he expressed concern over the recurrence of these incidents. He emphasised that disputes should be settled through the proper channels.
“If there is a serious issue involving an artist, it should be reported to the police and handled through legal procedures. It should not be handled the way this incident was,” Kenyi added.
The Union also took the opportunity to address rumors circulating online, clarifying that reports claiming the incident was linked to John Frog’s alleged ties to government security structures were unconfirmed and irrelevant to the central conflict.
The statement follows a viral video on social media showing John Frog in a physical altercation with security personnel at Jebel Market. Following the arrest, the SSAU acted quickly to locate the artist and facilitate his release from custody.
The Union reiterated its commitment to fostering a peaceful relationship between the creative community and law enforcement agencies across South Sudan.
