President Salva Kiir Mayardit has arrived in Kampala to attend the inauguration ceremony of Uganda’s President-elect Yoweri Museveni, scheduled for Tuesday.

According to the Presidential Press Unit, President Kiir will also hold bilateral talks with President Museveni during his visit.

“While in Kampala, Kiir will hold bilateral meetings with the host president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in deepening ties between South Sudan and Uganda and addressing critical regional matters,” the statement partly read.

The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic relations between South Sudan and Uganda, as well as addressing key regional and security issues of mutual interest.

President Museveni, who was re-elected in the January 15, 2026, general elections, secured 71.65 percent of the vote, extending his leadership for another term.

The visit underscores the continued cooperation between the two neighboring countries, which share strong historical, economic, and political ties within the region.

President Kiir’s visit to Kampala comes amid a series of recent high-level diplomatic and security-focused engagements within the region.

In April 2025, President Museveni visited Juba for a working trip during which he held extensive talks with President Kiir on peace, security, and economic cooperation between the two neighboring states. The visit included discussions on the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement and cross-border trade cooperation.

Kiir himself has also made reciprocal visits to Uganda on multiple occasions, reflecting the close political and security ties between the two governments, particularly on issues related to border security, refugee movements, and peace implementation in South Sudan.

The visit highlights the continued diplomatic engagement between the two leaders at a time when both countries remain key actors in regional peace and security dynamics.
