The Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO) has called on the African Union to accelerate the implementation of key resolutions supporting South Sudan’s political transition and preparations for national elections.
CEPO Executive Director Edmund Yakani appealed to former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, the African Union envoy to the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
He calls for faster progress on the African Union C-5 declaration resolutions.
Yakani said the resolutions were already endorsed by the government of South Sudan and supported by opposition parties as part of ongoing efforts to advance the peace and democratic transition process.
The activist expressed that the country is at a critical stage in its political transition as it moves toward planned elections, warning that delays in implementing key milestones could undermine confidence in the process.
He also expressed concern that the June 22, 2026, deadline for the National Elections Commission to publish the final voter register and announce the election timetable could be missed due to political and administrative challenges.
Yakani further raised concerns over disputed amendments to the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), saying they could threaten the implementation of the peace agreement and affect stability during the transition period.
He added that CEPO will intensify efforts to promote ceasefire compliance and advocate for inclusive political dialogue to address ongoing political tensions.
The organisation also urged regional and international partners to remain engaged in supporting South Sudan’s peace process, warning that sustained support is essential to prevent further instability.
