The Ministry of Health has dispatched supportive supervision teams to several parts of South Sudan in a nationwide effort to assess health service delivery, monitor ongoing health projects, and identify challenges affecting the country’s healthcare system.
The supervision mission, led by the Project Management Unit (PMU), is overseeing the implementation of the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP), a government initiative aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services across the country.
The teams have been deployed to Yirol, Kapoeta, Aweil, Yambio, and other locations, with additional counties expected to be covered in the coming days.
During the visits, officials will assess the performance of health facilities, engage with frontline health workers, consult local authorities, and evaluate progress in implementing health sector reforms.
According to the Ministry of Health, as seen in the press statement, the mission is intended to strengthen oversight of health programs, identify operational gaps, and provide technical support to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.
“The supportive supervision exercise will help us understand the realities on the ground, monitor project implementation, engage health workers and local leaders, and identify challenges that require timely intervention,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry added that the findings from the exercise will help guide future planning and decision-making to ensure health services are delivered more effectively and equitably across the country.
South Sudan’s health sector continues to face significant challenges, including shortages of skilled health personnel, inadequate medical supplies, weak infrastructure, and limited access to healthcare in many rural and conflict-affected areas. Seasonal flooding and disease outbreaks have further strained the country’s fragile health system.
Despite these challenges, the government and its development partners have been implementing reforms through the Health Sector Transformation Project to strengthen primary healthcare, improve health facility management, and enhance the resilience of the national health system.
The Ministry of Health said it remains committed to building a stronger and more resilient health sector that guarantees all South Sudanese access to quality, equitable, and sustainable healthcare services.
The Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) is one of the Ministry of Health’s key reform programs designed to improve health service delivery across South Sudan.
Through regular supportive supervision, government officials monitor the implementation of health programs, mentor health workers, identify service delivery gaps, and recommend corrective measures.
The exercise is considered an important tool for improving accountability, strengthening health systems, and ensuring that public health investments translate into better healthcare outcomes for communities.
