South Sudan Red Cross warns against misuse of its emblem

By Lodu William Odiya

South Sudan has raised concern over the increasing abuse and misuse of the Red Crescent, Red Cross, and Red Crystal emblems and their indicative logos across the country.

The authorities warned that unauthorised use of the protected emblems is punishable under the laws of the Republic of South Sudan and urged individuals and institutions to immediately stop using them without legal authorisation.

“Pharmacies, ambulances, medical clinics, health centres and medical complexes have been advised to adopt alternative logos for identification instead of using the protected Red Cross, Red Crescent, or Red Crystal emblems,” the statement read.

The warning comes amid growing concerns that misuse of the emblems could undermine public understanding of their humanitarian significance and expose humanitarian personnel and volunteers to unnecessary risks while carrying out their duties.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems are internationally recognised symbols associated with humanitarian protection and assistance, particularly during emergencies, armed conflicts, and disasters.

Authorities stressed that protecting the emblems is important for ensuring that staff and volunteers of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement can safely access communities and provide life-saving assistance.

“We call on the public to protect and respect these emblems, particularly the South Sudan Red Cross logo,” the authorities said.

They urged health facilities, private businesses, and other institutions currently displaying the protected symbols to review their branding and replace unauthorised logos with appropriate alternatives.

The public has also been encouraged to report cases of misuse and to support efforts aimed at preserving the integrity and protective value of the emblems.

Officials said continued misuse could jeopardise the work of humanitarian personnel by creating confusion over who is officially associated with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The authorities reiterated that respect for the emblems is not only a legal obligation but also an important measure for protecting humanitarian workers, volunteers, and the communities they serve.
