NATION TALK: Citizens must embrace hope as NEC delivers voter registration materials

The delivery of voter registration materials and equipment by the National Elections Commission (NEC) to states and administrative areas marks an important step in South Sudan’s preparations for the anticipated December 2026 general elections.

As the Commission continues distributing the necessary materials, citizens should embrace hope, peace and unity as the country moves towards an important democratic process.

The delivery of voter registration books, supplementary forms, laminating machines and registration kits to Greater Pibor, Ruweng and Abyei Administrative Areas, Unity State and Northern Bahr el Ghazal State demonstrates progress in preparations for voter registration.

This follows the earlier handover of materials to the Central Equatoria State High Elections Committee.

For many South Sudanese, the prospect of participating in general elections represents an opportunity to exercise their democratic rights and contribute to determining the country’s leadership.

Citizens should therefore welcome these preparations with optimism while recognising that peaceful participation is essential to the success of the electoral process.

However, elections should not become a source of division, hostility or violence among communities. Political differences are normal in a democratic society, but they should never destroy relationships, threaten lives or undermine national stability.

Citizens must learn to respect one another’s political opinions, regardless of party affiliation, ethnicity, religion or regional background.

Political leaders also have a responsibility to promote peaceful competition. They should discourage inflammatory statements, hate speech, intimidation and any actions that could provoke violence among their supporters.

Political ambition should never be placed above the lives and safety of ordinary citizens.

The NEC must equally ensure that voter registration is conducted transparently, fairly and without discrimination. Women, young people, persons with disabilities and citizens living in remote communities should have equal opportunities to register and participate.

Public awareness campaigns are also necessary to ensure that citizens understand registration requirements, locations and schedules.

Security institutions, civil society organisations, religious leaders and community representatives should work together to promote peaceful participation throughout the country.

Citizens must also avoid spreading misinformation that could create confusion or undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

South Sudan has experienced years of conflict, political uncertainty and displacement. The country therefore needs an environment in which citizens can express their political choices freely without fear.

As voter registration preparations advance, hope must go hand in hand with responsibility. Peace and unity should remain the foundation of the electoral process because elections are not merely about choosing leaders but also about strengthening national cohesion.

Every South Sudanese citizen has a role to play in ensuring that the country approaches the December polls with dignity, tolerance and a shared commitment to peace.

God protect South Sudan.
