Women leaders in Eastern Equatoria State are calling for stronger government support and improved collaboration to address challenges affecting women’s participation and welfare as the country approaches the upcoming elections.
The appeal was raised by the State Women Association Chairlady, Anyek Rose John, during a courtesy visit to the State Caretaker Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Ibwaha Lucy Allam.
Leading members of her executive committee, Anyek briefed the minister on the association’s ongoing activities, achievements, and operational challenges, particularly difficulties in reaching women across the state’s counties and administrative areas.
She emphasised the need for continued support from the state government and development partners to strengthen programmes addressing gender-based violence and other pressing issues affecting women.
The chairlady commended partner organisations and the state government for their contributions towards improving women’s welfare, while highlighting the importance of strengthening coordination between the state association and women groups at the county level.
She said cooperation and information sharing among women leaders had helped promote collective action in addressing challenges affecting women across the state.
Madam Anyek also praised the caretaker minister for her efforts in promoting equal educational opportunities for citizens.
Responding to the concerns, Minister Ibwaha Lucy Allam encouraged women leaders to strengthen their unity and work collectively towards achieving their common objectives.
She cautioned against political interests that could undermine women’s unity, urging them not to allow self-serving politicians to exploit their positions for personal political gains.
The minister further called for peace, mutual understanding, and stronger cooperation among women at the state, county, and payam levels.
