A security vehicle travelling from Yambio to Juba was attacked on Monday at approximately 4:45 PM by an unidentified armed group operating in the Lanya Area of Mundri, Western Equatoria State.
Major General Philip Madut, Commissioner of Police for Western Equatoria State, confirmed the incident. At the time of the ambush, two security personnel were en route to Juba.
When their vehicle came under fire from an uncertain number of assailants, the officers responded swiftly, killing one attacker. However, one security officer sustained an injury to his left leg.
“It was a military vehicle carrying officers traveling from Western Equatoria to Juba that got ambushed on the way,” Maj. Gen. Madut stated. “One of our personnel from national security was injured in the legs. They were shooting randomly, and you can’t ascertain the exact number of the attackers.”
Maj. Gen. Madut added that the injured national security officer is currently receiving medical treatment in Lanya, Mundri, and will proceed to Juba for further care.
Lanya area in Mundri is known for increased insecurity along the Juba-Yambio Highway. However, the Police Commissioner noted that the security situation is normal and plans are underway to enhance road patrols to minimize attacks on travellers along the highway.
This latest attack on the Juba-Yambio Highway has further heightened anxiety among regular commuters on this vital route.
