South Sudan, Uganda to form committee to investigate border confrontations

By Lodu William Odiya

The South Sudan Army and neighboring Uganda have agreed to form a joint committee to investigate the recent armed confrontation at the border.

On Monday, the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) engaged in an encroachment plan in South Sudan’s Kajo Keji County, according to the county commissioner.

The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) responded to such aggression, hence the armed confrontations that displaced residents in the Nyainga-Muda area of Bori Boma in Kajo Keji County.

The SSPDF Spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang broke silence, citing that calm has returned with the two countries forming a joint committee to investigate the clashes.

According to the statement to the media, Ruai said the SSPDF Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Dau Aturjong Nyuol, had contacted his Ugandan counterpart, and they both reached an agreement that returned calm.

According to Lul, the two countries have resolved to form a joint committee to investigate the circumstances that resulted in armed confrontation between the two countries.

“Formation of a joint investigation committee to ascertain the circumstances under which the armed confrontations erupted,” Ruai said in a statement.

“The established joint technical border committee will continue with their work aimed at finding peaceful resolution on recurrent border-related disputes,” it read.

The preliminary report indicated that forces from the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) attacked the SSPDF local detachment of a joint operation in the area.

Due to the attacks, a cross-border meeting between the local leaders at Nyainga-Muda was interrupted.

However, due to the fluidity of the situation, verified information on casualties was not available.

The authorities urged people to remain calm, avoid the affected area, and wait for further official updates, highlighting their commitment to the safety of all citizens, and encouraged community members to report any relevant information through official county communication channels.

In the recent statement issued on Monday, 28 July 2025, Isaac Wori, Press Secretary in the Commissioner’s Office, confirmed that the incident occurred around 3:00 PM and involved an exchange of gunfire between suspected Ugandan troops and a local joint operation unit stationed in the area.

The Commissioner’s Office stated it is working closely with security agencies to establish the facts surrounding the alleged attack.

“We are actively coordinating with the security authorities on the ground to verify the full circumstances surrounding this development,” Wori said.

The Ugandan authorities are yet to comment on the matter. This incident comes amid ongoing efforts by South Sudan and Uganda to strengthen cross-border cooperation and resolve long-standing tensions linked to border demarcation and military presence along contested areas.
