Governor Kok expresses hope as the country celebrates martyrs day

Dr. Riek Gai Kok, governor of Jonglei state has assured citizens of a hopeful future for South Sudan despite the persistent challenges the country, as he paid tribute to the fallen soldiers on martyrs’ day.

In his martyrs day statement released on July 30th, 2025, Riek Gai Kok honored the memory of the all those who lost their lives during the struggle for independence describing their sacrifices as the “foundation upon which South Sudan continues to pursue peace and unity.”

“For South Sudan to reach where we are today, many laid down their lives,” the governor stated. “The individuals we honor today are those who selflessly put our country before themselves. We have lost countless heroes and it is both rational and just that we dedicate a day to commemorate their sacrifice,” governor Kok added.

He equated the sacrifices of the martyrs to those made by Jesus’ Christ describing their commitment as “a symbol of ultimate devotion to a greater cause.” He said the commemoration of the martyr’s day should serve as a reminder of the value of sacrifices made not just for personal but national future. A moment of national reflection and urged citizens to embrace unity, peace, and shared purpose

The governor optimistically reaffirmed his belief in the country’s resilience and ultimate success. “No matter the challenges we face, victory is assured. We will not labor in vain,” he noted.
