South Korean Commander honored for transformative humanitarian contributions in GPAA

The government of Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), has honored Colonel Kwon Byungguk, Commander of the Republic of Korea Horizontal Military Engineering and Development Company (ROKHMEDC), for exemplary humanitarian service and infrastructure development in the region.

During a farewell event held on July 29th, 2025 in Pibor, officials lauded Col. Kwon for spearheading a number of impactful projects that have led to infrastructural transformation and community resilience.

Officials credited his contingent with the rehabilitation of the Airstrip along with other critical road networks that connect Manyabol, Gumuruk, Pibor, Lekuangole, and Akobo including the construction of flood-prevention dykes to safeguard vulnerable populations.

Additionally, the contingent supported the creation of soccer fields to foster social cohesion and youth development.

UNMISS Jonglei Field Office Head, Geetha Pious, commended the Korean unit’s integrated strategy, stating, “Col. Kwon’s leadership brought tangible transformation to GPAA and demonstrated the impact of peace-support operations when paired with development.”

The region’s Chief Administrator, Gola Boyoi Gola appreciated the Korean contingent for exceeding expectations and fulfilling their pledges. “Your unwavering commitment reflects a deep humanitarian spirit and enduring service to the people of Greater Pibor,” Gola stated.

He also presented Col. Kwon with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the government.

In a show of their long-term commitment to support to the people of Pibor, ROKHMEDC-UNMISS donated shoes to the locals and pledged to make necessary upgrades to the airstrip, reinforcing infrastructure that enables humanitarian access and economic recovery.

UNMISS reiterated its commitment to promoting development alongside protection of civilians, affirming that integrated peace operations are key to achieving durable peace in South Sudan.
