At least four people were confirmed dead, and more than twenty cases of cholera outbreak were reported in Kudo Payam of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State.
Solomon Odongi Jackson confirmed to this outlet in a phone interview the surge in suspected cases of cholera outbreak in areas of Ofiri, Hutiala, Lowoi, and Iyata.
“The number of what we have currently in our list is going to be 15 or 20. But so far within the suspected cases, we have four dead cases registered in the facility,” he said.
“But within the facility, whereas outside the facility, this is something that we have not yet confirmed,” Odongi added.
Odongi worried that the situation with the sudden onset of severe, watery diarrhea and vomiting of patients is dire and alarming during rainy season, especially where they are just treated under trees.
“Currently, when we look at the current situation in the facility, in terms of when you look at the way how we are trying to manage these cases, it is not all that easy. Even the isolation center, when you look at it, is not a well-stable isolation center. It is just under the tree,” Odongi noted the situation.
Meanwhile, Sicko Jackson Sotero, the chairman of Kudo Payam, urged the state government to intervene and rescue the lives of people who are in need of health assistance.
“I call upon the county government to intervene in the cholera outbreak,” Jackson stated.
Jackson appealed to both humanitarians and the government to take action before the situation worsens.
However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) earlier in 2025, there had been a total of 51 054 reported cases and 973 deaths in South Sudan.
