The newly appointed commissioner of Aweil East County, Garang Thiang Deng has warned against creating more traditional chieftaincies.
According to the commissioner, creation of huge numbers of chiefs were done in the past noting currently violates the to local government act.
“According to the local government act, an executive chief is supposed to have a population of more than 500 people, which is not the case, in recent years,” Commissioner narrated.
Thiang made the remark this week during his reception at Wanyjok County headquarters after taking oath of office in Aweil town.
Commissioner Thiang also appreciated the people of Aweil East, and by the extension NBGs for maintaining peace and unity, while emphasizing exerting more efforts to contribute to economic development and growth.
Thiang emphasized that “In recent years, a huge number chieftaincies were established without due procedures in the short period of this transitional period of national unity, “he stressed.
While closing his first public address, commissioners Thiang promised to carry out public consultations to acquaint himself on challenges facing the county and immediate expectations.
Early this month, President Kiir sacked Mr. Diing Aher Ngong from his position as a commissioner of Aweil East County and replaced him with Garang Thiang Deng.
He also replaced the Speaker of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Assembly, Achol William Amoi, with Abuk Jiel Dhieu as the new Speaker.
Aweil East County is among the five counties of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, bordering Southern Kordofan and Darfur of Sudan respectively.
