For the past three months, Juba’s residents have been fighting an economic battle, finding some relief from the constant threat of street violence. The government’s recent efforts to arrest suspected gang members in areas like Gumbo Sherikat seemed to be working, and the stories of killings and assaults had notably decreased. But now, the gangs are back on our streets, and the lives of ordinary citizens are once again at risk.
The government must take firm action. Simply arresting these criminals isn’t enough. It’s a frustrating cycle: a gang member is arrested in the morning, only to be released by the afternoon, even after committing murder. This happens because the system is broken, from the police station to the judges. When there is no punishment, there is no deterrent. The government must establish a clear, functional system where criminals are held accountable for their actions.
These gangs are not just a nuisance; they are a deadly threat. They roam the streets with pangas, knives, and even guns, leaving a trail of violence and fear. Their activities; killing, stealing, and harming innocent people are tarnishing the reputation of our city and our nation.
These crimes demand serious and immediate action. Those found guilty must be put in prison for a significant number of years. This will not only remove them from our streets but also send a clear message to others considering a life of crime. To the parents of these young boys and men: it is your duty to guide your children toward a better path. Encourage them to go to school, learn a trade, or start a small farm, anything that benefits the community rather than tearing it apart.
Almost every area in Juba is unsafe because of these ruthless gangs. They show no mercy to citizens and seem to operate without fear of consequences, right in front of the authorities. If the government and parents don’t intervene now, what future leaders will South Sudan have?
I call on the government of South Sudan to protect its citizens and their property. Arrest these so-called gangs and make them face the full force of the law.
God Protect South Sudan.
