In a significant move to bolster journalism in South Sudan, the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has partnered with the Indian Embassy.

The collaboration was announced following a recent meeting at the Indian Embassy in Juba between UJOSS Secretary General Majak Daniel Kuany Alier and the Ambassador of the Republic of India to South Sudan, H.E. Anil Nautiyal.

The meeting provided a crucial platform to discuss strengthening media cooperation, with a central focus on UJOSS’s upcoming Journalism Excellence Awards.

Both parties explored key areas of mutual interest, including professional training opportunities for journalists, knowledge-sharing programs, and broader media development support. The ultimate goal is to elevate journalistic standards and reinforce press freedom across the country.

Ambassador Nautiyal affirmed India’s commitment, stating, “India is dedicated to supporting the development of a professional, ethical, and independent media sector in South Sudan.”

UJOSS Secretary General Majak expressed his gratitude for the Embassy’s willingness to collaborate. “We appreciate the Ambassador’s receptiveness and the Embassy’s interest in supporting the growth of a responsible media,” he said. “Strengthened partnerships like this are vital to our mission of promoting quality journalism and freedom of expression.”

The meeting, which also included Deng John, UJOSS Warrap State Secretary, concluded with a shared commitment to continued engagement, signaling a promising new chapter for media development in South Sudan.

UJOSS was established to elevate journalism standards and promote ethical reporting in South Sudan. The organization’s efforts, including the annual Journalism Excellence Awards, faced challenges like limited resources and a need for professional training.

To overcome these hurdles, UJOSS sought international partnerships, leading to the meeting with the Indian Embassy, which has a history of supporting media development. This collaboration marks a significant step in UJOSS’s strategy to build a stronger and more independent media sector with international support.
