Yei River County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme has donated one million South Sudanese pounds (SSP) to assist displaced families in Pokula Boma, Central Equatoria State.
The commissioner’s initiative signals the need to help those affected by conflict in Yei, Central Equatoria and South Sudan at large.
Speaking during his visit on Friday, Taban said the funds would be used to purchase cereals for distribution among the displaced community.
He noted that this was the only cash he had been able to mobilize so far and pledged to brief the Central Equatoria State Governor on the continuing humanitarian challenges.
Local residents welcomed the commissioner’s visit, describing it as a sign of solidarity. Seventy-year-old Rufas Peja Arona expressed gratitude but highlighted the community’s urgent needs, including food, blankets, shelter, medicines, clean water, and access to education for children.
“We ask the government and partners not to leave us to suffer like this, and we call on armed groups to protect civilians,” Arona said.
Pokula Executive Chief Felix Sebit said the ongoing conflict had displaced many families, with some returning to Uganda.
He commended the commissioner’s support, saying it would help the community address pressing needs.
Army commander Deng Kual, stationed in the area, praised the commissioner’s visit as a sign of committed leadership.
He assured the displaced families that security forces would provide maximum protection until peace is restored.
